The decision to walk down the road was to avoid a very icy trail covered with a fresh layer of powdery snow. Another fall waiting to happen I thought. And we were only supposed to walk about a mile....the taxi company in Great Barrington thought we were on the Mass side of the border when in fact we were in CT. Luckily we found a pay phone after 4 miles of walking...and cleared up the snafu.

Been a lot of years since I was at NW cabin (if it still called that)
The top of Undermountain Trail is usually very treacherous with ice after freeze thaw cycles. I remember sliding it like a luge run when i went up without crampons early one spring.
I am fairly certain you were in Mass when you got past the Mt Frissell parking area near the last few houses in MA on East St (becomes dirt Mt Washington Rd in CT). That is a long way for an taxi to go, no wonder it was so expensive.
I always enjoy that area, the Rt 41 --> Undermountain Trail --> Paridise Lane Trail --> AT --> Undermountain Trail --> Rt 41 loop is my favorite for early summer Mountain Laurel and then wild blueberries as well. Very peaceful and not much midweek use.

I agree with everything you just said. I was definitely on the CT side of Mt Washington road. The dispatcher that took my call was not listening to me clearly enough I guess. Your right the cab was looking for me on the MA side of the road, we ended up walking the entire CT side of Mt Washington road till it turned into East Street. We used the pay phone at the Mt Washington State Forest Headquarters and cleared up the confusion.

It is still called Northwest Camp and I plan on using it again....maybe using it as a starting and stopping point for a week or two hike this summer. Great trails in the area, very well maintained, and yes....bring crampons.
