Read a little about ringworm parasites that live in raccoon feces that can be transmitted to the final host (humans) via drinking untreated water that has been contaminated by the feces or consuming dirt that has come into contact with that feces....both are relatively unlikely but do you really want to take the chance of ringworms burrowing and laying eggs in your brain, and then consuming your brain tissue until your a vegetable?

Personally I use a Katahdin Vario.....pumps very fast, ceramic and charcoal filter. Easily field maintainable, weighs 17 oz with everything and the extra weight helps me sleep at night.

Not saying you can't do just as John G and many others do and not treat your water. But Giardia and Ringworms are just two of thousands of water born parasites that lurk in our waterways. Russian Roulette is a fun game though
