lot of people set out to hike all of the appalachian trail.

most don't have the physical strength or mental toughness to pass up a blue blaze shortcut.

Blue blazes aren't shortcuts and the AT doesn't take much physical strength. Damn near every blue-blaze trail off the AT was white-blaze at one time. And much more scenic.

I wasn't arguing or advocating any position, just merely pointing out that according to distance vs. following only white blazes, some blue blazes are indeed shortcuts.

The color of blazes on trees mean nothing to serious long distance walkers who do it year after year. For most AT thru-hikers the destination is the journey. And getting the patches and certificates.

I'm not a through hiker, but my dayhiking of Pa AT is pretty close to "purism". We go section by section, never skipping over or missing a part of one just to get a better start or stop point. Most of our hiking is out and back, but it bothers me that a couple of the sections we have brought 2 cars, which means we won't have technically completed the trail both ways when we're done.
