I always treat my water. I carry the First Need XL Purifier. Its on the heavy side but I can't chance not treating my water.

But I would never tell anyone you must filter or treat. To each their own. I wish I didn't have to treat but it's not an option for me.

Sorry for the thread swerve...
My pump is now pumping really slow and hard to do while pumping. What is a good lub. to use? I'm sure Mumbles will get tired of pumping water for me.

How much water should you carry at a time? Water is a concern for me too. I am worried that with the hot dry summers there will be little available water so I feel like I need to carry tons of it with me all of the time. Bad idea though because of weight.
I drink alot of water anyway. I'm sure I'll drink more on the trail with all of the physical activity.

So what do you guys suggest as far as quantity of water to be carried? I plan on carrying a filtration pump.

2 liters.

if its a dry year you may end up carrying an empty gatoraid bottle (1 liter) and using it occasionally in certain areas. i've never had to do this.

sounds like you may have a dirty filter that needs cleaned.

Go to your nearest scuba shop and get a silicone lube... non toxic.

It is a Katadyn mini. My outfitter recommended useing chapstick on the O ring. That didn't help one bit. The filter and housing has been cleaned after every use. So it looks like I'll be trying to find a scuba shop for some lube.

Katadyn mini

Perksgirl I very seldom carried more than 1 liter of water at any given time during my thru, and most often less than that. There are occasional dry stretches and you will know about them from the trail grapevine and you can carry more if needed. Of course, some people carried more than me, it gets to be a pretty personal thing that you don't even think too much about, everyone consumes different amounts. It's something you can work on and fine tune as you get comfortable on the trail!

The replacement filters for the katadyn Hiker Pro come with a small tube of silicone grease so I guess that is the right stuff to use.
