Hey, is that the one with the backpack attachment? Back when I was little, which wasn't too long ago... there was a supersoaker with three tube tanks, three ball tanks and a backpack for holding more water. Major pumping required. But you would have a full tank when everyone else was dry. The thing weighed a ton.

I was reading posts here and on other forums and I thought I read somewhere that the new regulations still required that the gun owner adhered to state and local permit requirements. Could be wrong on that though.

Sorry to here that about your Mom. Can't imagine going through that.

When I was in Boy Scouts at summer camp we used to "borrow" the galvanized steel fire fighters backpack canisters for water fights. The canister held something like 5 gallons of water and had a length of hose with a 24" brass hand action pump. They weighed a ton, and were the most uncomfortable contraption ever. BUT, if you used the fin point nozzle tip and were any closer than about 30 feet you could leave a great welt on the other person.

I also read that it would be left up to each Park Superintendent. I could also be wrong on that.

Not anymore a CWL is good for several southern states due to some reciprocal agreements.

I went back over to WB to dig up my post from the thread and ecerpt it and clean it up, the purpose is not to come out against guns, or carry, the rant is just about thinking it through, here is what I posted;

Its sad folks, I work in some of the worst neighborhoods of west and south Philadelphia in the last three years and now in Wilmington. I never felt the need, even when working with law enforcement and gun shops in my profession. I have served as a witness for the prosecution side of a trial on a homicide. We are discussing the most unnecessary pound & a half of metal needed for the trail. Nothing UL about it. If you use your weapon under any circumstances on the AT be prepared to have the worst five years of the rest of your life.

Take a gun and turn it into an ideal car for a moment, You have a right to get a permit to drive, you go out and practice with your dad's car for a while. You are now licensed to drive down the highway. Did anyone think they are not going to have an accident? Not too many of us have a perfect driving record in life.

What as adults do we take away from the last guy (Harold Fish) who used a gun in clear self defense against another hot headed attacking adult and two dogs? He was in a park; he used his gun in self defense. A man was running and attacking him! The first bullet hit him at thirty feet away, the second was at 15 feet and the third was point blank. He got several years in court and lost his case and is now serving a score of years in Jail. The first time you use it in self defense is the last day of the rest of your life. I am asking if you thought it through, and do you know a good lawyer..... Your choice to carry a glock & ammo (a pound and a half) is your choice; your right to conceal it is fine by me.

A year and a half ago we were all posting how safe the AT was and then Meridith was killed, another unfortunate moment for trail history, Today gun purchases are way up in these hard economic times.

Too bad Harold Fish isn't a blog member I imagine he'd be able to offer some insight; he's had plenty of time to think about the consequences. If it’s clearly on your belt, would you carry it on the AT?

Tangent,

While a think the Taurus 357 titanium would would inch (or ounce) out your Derringer in weight, I would have to second Camp Counciler's motion agaisnt carrying while hiking.

I actually surprise the $^#* out of myself for not carrying while hiking, as I always carry a pistol in town. While legally permitted to carry a conceiled weapon throghout the AT, it's something I'd really just rather not introduce into that enviornment.

For what it's worth, I think the AT is just a nice, pretty place to get away from it all and a city tool, like a pistol (or a cell phone, for that matter) would just take part of that away from me. Likewise, if I see somebody with a gun (save for maybe the geeks on Tactical from Base in GA.), I'm outta there faster than I can say "Anything but my cigarettes!"

Best,

-Rev

I can't agree with you more. Let me make clear that I don't own a handgun, nor do I plan to. I would shoot my eye out!! I wouldn't carry one even if someone gave it to me on the trail. The AT is a place to find peace and it should stay that way.

Well said. I would add they're not needed for several reasons.

Peace be with you

The concealed carry reciprocity laws are pretty interesting. I don't have all of the details but one of my friends is a walking encyclopedia on the subject.

For example, you can fill out a Vermont carry permit form and get approved even if you're not a resident. That permit is valid in a few other states that aren't as easy to obtain. Maryland is the opposite. You'd be fortunate to get a permit as a resident. So it would be difficult to patch together all of the required permits. Not impossible, but difficult.

For the record, I have a PA permit but seldom carry outside of hunting season. Never on the trail.
